Our Story

I was very shocked to see such fake kimonos

One day, as I was surfing online, I noticed that Japanese kimonos were being sold abroad on online shopping sites. However, the "Japanese Kimonos" I saw were very different to what most Japanese people would imagine when they think of kimonos: some were too short in length, others were made with a cheap looking, shiny fabric, and yet more had strange pattern designs. And these were all being sold as "Traditional Japanese Kimonos..." I was very shocked to see such fake kimonos being casually sold as the real thing.

My answer was to open kimonos online shop

I also felt very frustrated that people abroad would not learn about the true culture of Japan. I wondered to myself, isn't there anything I can do to tell more people abroad about the real beauty of Japanese kimonos and the incredible techniques of the craftsmen? Can't I do something to help them find out? And of course, the answer I arrived at was to open my own online shop for kimonos.

Started selling only 3 kimonos in June 2007

But sold in the first month is only three kimonos.

I had a lot of things I wanted to share about kimono with people abroad .

My challenge has begun.

Learned a lot about kimono and business from people

I live in Tokyo, I was lucky enough to have many opportunities to learn about kimonos from kimono experts, and I spent many hours studying them. Finally, I was able to fulfill my wish to help people all over the world learn more about and enjoy real Japanese kimonos and yukata kimonos.

What are our strengths?

Always more than 1000 different kimono designs in stock

Fortunately for us, having an office in Tokyo means easy access to finding the city's the most beautiful, colorful kimono. This advantage is what allows us to stock Huge number of Japanese kimono and yukata.

In the past, Tokyo was known as Edo. It was the political, economic and cultural center of Japan, and people brought kimono from their regions with them when they came to the capital. Even now, kimono culture in Tokyo is blossoming, and Tokyo is home to many different styles of kimono from all over the country. You can easily find brand new Japanese kimono and yukata in addition to many high quality vintage kimono, still in pristine condition.

Our kimono and yukata are genuine, high-quality pieces

Occasionally, you will hear kimono and obi belts described as a “wearable art form,” because they are much more than just a piece of “clothing.” Each has a delicate beauty that is difficult to articulate. This beauty is the result of the special techniques and collaboration of several expert craftsmen. One craftsman creates the design, another dyes the fabric, one weaves the fabric, and finally a tailor puts the kimono together.

Sometimes, stores online or abroad misleadingly claim to sell genuine Japanese kimono and yukata. There are even some made from satin-like fabrics that look more like lingerie than real kimono. Kimono and yukata like that don’t exist in Japan. When making a Japanese kimono or yukata, artisans rely on the aesthetic sense, techniques, culture, traditions and values, passed down from generation to generation. Only with this knowledge can you make a true kimono, comfortable to wear and with a design unrivalled in beauty. A real kimono will be a delight for your skin, eyes, and especially your heart.

Our Kimonos and yukatas are reasonably priced

In Japan, most orders for yukata are made in the spring and summer. Fall and winter are slow seasons for this industry. Because the demand for yukata varies throughout the year, many businesses spike the prices of their yukata during spring and summer. We, however, are able to offer brand new, high quality yukata at consistently lower prices than other stores. Our secret to doing this is our customer base located all over the world. Regardless of the season in Japan, we continue selling yukata to our customers all over the world, all year round. This means that our wholesalers and manufacturers also receive steady orders from us, enabling them to give us discounts on their products.

Japanese kimono require several months of hard work to make, and because of this, they are more expensive than yukata. If you were to buy a new kimono, a cheap one would cost over \100,000 ($1,000) and an expensive one could cost over \1,000,000 ($10,000). Even for those who live in Japan, kimono aren’t something many people can easily buy. At our store, we are able to sell kimono at lower, more reasonable prices than other retail stores. Our secret is buying through kimono auctions. You need special permission from the government to be able to go to a kimono auction, and only a select few kimono retailers have this privilege.

And Right Now

Since opening Kimono Market Sakura, over 10,000 fans of kimonos and Japanese culture, from 80 different countries, have bought Japanese kimonos, yukata kimonos and hakama kimonos through our store. Doing business in English, which isn't my native language, is challenging, but every day I am encouraged by the happy thank you messages and beautiful photos of customers wearing their kimonos that I receive. I feel extremely grateful every day to my amazing customers who have helped me grow Kimono Yukata Market Sakura from the small store it was into one of Japan's biggest online kimono retailers.
